The Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA
Ebenezer Baptist Church is a historic African American Baptist congregation on Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1886 by a small group of believers, many of them formerly enslaved, under its first pastor, Rev. John Andrew Parker, the church takes its name from the biblical "stone of help." Ebenezer moved into its landmark Auburn Avenue sanctuary in 1922. Rev. Martin Luther King Sr. served as pastor for more than four decades, and his son, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., served as co-pastor, making Ebenezer a spiritual center of the Civil Rights Movement.
Today the historic sanctuary is administered by the National Park Service as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, while the congregation worships in a newer sanctuary across the street. Since 2005, Rev. Dr. Raphael G. Warnock has served as senior pastor, only the fifth in the church's history. Ebenezer describes its mission as embodying the ministry of Jesus Christ through acts of service that feed the poor, liberate the oppressed, welcome the stranger, and visit the sick and imprisoned.
