Rev. Dr. Marshall F. Mauney

Denomination: Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)
Organization: First Lutheran Church Norfolk

Rev. Dr. Marshall F. Mauney was a Lutheran pastor, preacher, and church leader whose ministry joined steady congregational care with thoughtful public witness. Born in Augusta, Georgia, in 1920, Mauney came from a family shaped by Lutheran ministry and went on to study at Lenoir-Rhyne University and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. He later received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Roanoke College.

Mauney served several Lutheran congregations before his long pastorate at First Lutheran Church Norfolk in Norfolk, Virginia, where he was named pastor emeritus after 20 years of service. His ministry extended beyond the parish through denominational leadership, including service on the Lutheran Church in America Executive Council, Lutheran World Ministry, the Virginia Synod, and the boards of Lutheran institutions. He also served as editor of The Virginia Lutheran and was recognized as a gifted public speaker.

On The Protestant Hour, Mauney preached with a pastor’s concern for Christian responsibility, human dignity, social ethics, and the church’s role in public life. His sermon “Sensing the Revolution,” broadcast in July 1981, draws on Romans 5:6-11 to explore America’s revolutionary ideals in light of the deeper revolutionary love of God revealed in Jesus Christ. The sermon uses the mustard seed as an image for God’s quiet, persistent work within history, pressing human communities toward mercy, justice, and care for people in need.

Rather than offering simple patriotic celebration, Mauney’s preaching wrestles with human rights, moral responsibility, national purpose, and spiritual complacency. His work reflects a conviction that public life and personal faith must be continually shaped by grace, mercy, and the ongoing work of God’s kingdom. For Day1 listeners, his voice remains a timely pastoral reminder that Christian preaching can speak clearly to civic life without confusing nation, church, and gospel in public conversation today, with theological care and clarity.
